Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ballot system and which countries does it apply to?
For the **2025โ€“2026 program year**, Australia has implemented a mandatory ballot system for citizens of **China, India, and Vietnam** applying for the Subclass 462. Applicants must first enter a government-run lottery before they can even receive an invitation to formally apply. The ballot is free to enter and is announced by the Department of Home Affairs. Demand significantly exceeds the annual quota, making competitive entry highly unpredictable.
What is the key difference between the 462 and the 417?
The **Subclass 417** is open to traditional partner countries (EU nations, UK, Canada, Japan, Korea) with no degree requirement. The **Subclass 462** is specifically designed for a separate cohort of countries (USA, Brazil, China, India, Southeast Asia, LATAM) but always mandates an educational qualification ranging from high school level (USA) to two years of university study (most nations).
Can I extend for a Second and Third WHV with the 462?
Yes. Just like the 417, you can apply for a Second 462 and a Third 462, requiring you to complete **3 months (88 days)** and **6 months** of specified regional work respectively. The same regional work occupations and Form 88EB employer declaration apply.
Can I work for the same employer for 12 months?
No. The same standard 6-month single-employer work limit applies to the 462 as it does to the 417. You may not work for the same employer for more than **6 months** during your 12-month visa period without a specific exemption.
Are there financial or tax implications I should know about?
Yes. As a Working Holiday Maker (both 417 and 462 classified), you are taxed at a **flat 15% rate** on the first AUD $45,000 earned. Register for a **Tax File Number (TFN)** immediately upon arriving โ€” without it, your employer is compelled to withhold income at the maximum 47% withholding rate.
Can I study while on the 462?
Yes, subject to the same constraint as the 417: you may not study for more than **4 months per course** at a single institution. Exceeding this cap constitutes a breach of visa conditions.
