Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a minimum investment amount required?
Unlike the Golden Visa (ARI) which mandated hundreds of thousands of euros, the D2 does not have a strict statutory minimum. It relies entirely on the 'reasonableness' of your business plan. A tech consulting shell might require €5,000; a restaurant buildout might require €50,000. The consulate assesses the viability.
Is the D2 replacing the Golden Visa?
Partially. With the closure of the real-estate wing of the Golden Visa, many applicants pivoted to the D2. However, be warned: the D2 requires you to be an active resident *living* in Portugal (spending 183+ days per year locally). It is not a 'pay and fly' passport scheme like the classic Golden Visa.
Do I start a company before or after applying?
You can do either. You can incorporate the Portuguese Lda remotely beforehand and show the operational articles of incorporation to strengthen the application, or you can present a definitive declaration of *intent* to incorporate upon arrival. The former is generally preferred by consulates.
