Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a quota for STEM roles?
Yes. STEM roles still draw from the 4,500 B permit pool, but they are given higher probability of approval in Phase One of the regional review.
Does my degree need to be recognized?
Generally, yes. For regulated STEM professions (like some Engineering roles), your degree must be validated by the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Directors of Education (EDK).
Can I bring my family?
Yes. Family reunification is guaranteed for STEM specialists, and spouses receive full, immediate work rights.
Can I switch to a self-employed permit?
Extremely difficult for third-country nationals. Self-employment quotas are even tighter than employee quotas and require significant investment/innovation proof.
Will 2026 have more quotas?
Quotas are set annually. 2026 tranches are stable at the current level, but mid-year adjustments can happen if certain sectors (like Pharma) reach critical scarcity.
