Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work while studying in Canada?
Yes. Most study permits allow you to work **off-campus up to 20 hours per week** during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks (like summer/winter holidays). Note that the temporary waiver allowing 40 hours per week expired in early 2024.
Who is exempt from the PAL requirement?
Exemptions include students applying for **Master's or Doctoral degrees**, primary and secondary school students, and students already in Canada on a valid study or work permit applying for an extension.
What is the Student Direct Stream (SDS)?
SDS is an expedited processing stream for residents of specific countries (including India, Philippines, China, etc.). It typically guarantees a decision within 20 days but requires a $10,000 CAD Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) and upfront tuition payment.
Does my study permit guarantee stay after graduation?
No. The study permit expires 90 days after your program ends. To stay and work, you must apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) before your student status expires.
