Frequently Asked Questions
What is the biggest benefit of the HSP visa?
Fast-tracked Permanent Residency (PR). Usually, PR requires 10 years of residency. If you have 70 points, you can apply for PR in 3 years. If you score 80 points or higher, you can apply for Permanent Residency after just 1 year.
Can I bring my parents to Japan on an HSP visa?
Yes, under specific conditions. If you have a child younger than 7 years old OR your spouse is pregnant, you can sponsor your parents or your spouse's parents to reside in Japan to assist. This is an exclusive benefit not available on standard visas.
Does my spouse get better work rights?
Yes. Spouses of HSP visa holders do not just get a standard 'Dependent' visa restricted to 28 hours. They can apply for a Designated Activities visa that allows them to work full-time in certain professional occupations without needing their own employer sponsor.
Is the HSP tied to my specific employer?
Yes. Unlike the standard work visa, the HSP is tied specifically to the entity that sponsored you. If you quit or change companies, you cannot simply notify Immigration; you MUST apply for a brand new HSP visa.
