Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work in bars or nightclubs?
Absolutely not. Under the 'Designated Activities' status of the WHV, there is a total, strict prohibition on working in 'businesses affecting public morals' (Fuzoku). This includes nightclubs, cabaret clubs, hostess/host bars, pachinko parlours, and adult entertainment. Doing so risks immediate deportation.
Can I switch to a standard work visa from a WHV?
Generally, yes. While on the WHV in Japan, you can secure full-time employment and apply for a 'Change of Status' to an Engineer/Humanities visa without having to leave the country. Some specific country agreements may have nuances, but for most nationalities it is permitted.
Does my spouse get a visa too?
No. The Working Holiday scheme is strictly individual. If you are married, your spouse must apply for and be granted their own standard or working holiday visa.
Do I need to pay for the Japanese National Health Insurance (NHI)?
Yes. Upon arriving and registering your address at the local ward office (Kuyakusho), you are legally required to enroll in the National Health Insurance scheme (Kokumin Kenko Hoken). As you initially have no income in Japan, the premiums for the first year will be heavily discounted (approx 1,500-2,500 JPY per month).
