Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for the Zoekjaar while outside the Netherlands?
Yes. You have a 3-year window from your graduation date to apply. If outside the NL, you will first receive an MVV (Long-Stay Visa) to enter and collect your permit.
Can I renew the Orientation Year?
No. The Orientation Year is a one-time-only permit. However, you can use it multiple times if you complete *another* qualifying degree (e.g., a PhD after a Master's).
What happens after the year ends?
You are expected to transition to another permit, most commonly the Highly Skilled Migrant (HSM) permit, taking advantage of your lower salary threshold lock-in.
Can my family join me?
Yes. Your family members can join you and also receive unrestricted access to the labor market for the duration of your Orientation Year.
Does my university definitely qualify?
Your institution must have been in the Top 200 of at least two rankings *at the time of your graduation* or at the time of your application.
